On night patrol, it tears the static the sea wind carries into stickers and slaps them on lampposts and along the pier—secret signs for the lost. Its dark fur looks like waves growing backward, and when it grins there’s a row of white surf-teeth. It often folds sea fog into paper monsters to spook alley cats, and folds worries into paper boats and sets them adrift. By morning you’ll find a card with a bitten-off corner in your shoe: “The problem has been swallowed by the sea—please do not retrieve.” Want to meet it? Then you’ll just have to wait by the shore at night.
